In other news....Oliver started school today! Claire, Annika, and I walked him the half of a block to school today and hung out in his classroom until he got settled. It didn't take him long to feel right at home. Upon arrival, Oliver led me through the potted garden to introduce me to the bunny rabbits in their pin. Once inside, I met his teacher, and Claire explained to Shawna how I was his teacher back in Seattle, and now I'm dropping him off at his new school, meeting his new teacher. How lovely his classroom is! It has high ceilings, a spacious loft, a cozy hide-away underneath, and giant windows to highlight the view of the beautiful garden just outside of the classroom.
As I held Annika and toured the room, a couple of girls looked up at me. They too, were holding babies, and grew excited to see a REAL baby in their classroom. They immediately sat down beside Annika and me with their babies in strollers and began to talk to me in Dutch. I would nod and just repeat the last word that they said and add, "Ja" (yeah). Claire told me, "Just think of Mae saying, "The baby sleeping! The baby is cute!""
When Annika began to cry out for a nap, I said goodbye to Oliver, who was totally engrossed in trains with his new teacher - something told me that this was going to be a relatively smooth transition for him.
With just Annika until one o'clock on Mondays and Tuesdays, I have time to clean the house, grocery shop, and cook the meals, all while enjoying the peace of a quiet home. Sometimes I wonder if this is what I was meant to do with my life - not a bad gig if I get to see the world while I'm at it, but I am starting to worry if I can handle the work load of grad school next year :)
