A Trip to the Middle Ages

Muiderslot Castle with a mote & drawbridge!
On Saturday, we took a trip to Muiderslot, a Castle located in a tiny town just northeast of Amsterdam. Built in 1285!

The day before, Oliver and I made banana
bread and brought it with us the castle. Yum!

Everyone was very excited for the addition
of our new rug in the living room

Researching the castle before going...

Welcome to Muiderslot!

"Aqua Weekend" where kids got to ride around in
inflatable balls on the mote !?

"We want to float on the mote!"

Just outside the castle

Want a birthday party at the castle? No problem, princess!

The flock of princesses run to safety in their castle

Treasures in the gift shop, a.k.a. former dungeon

Claire couldn't resist getting
the boys knight costumes

O gets ready to be knighted

"I knight you, Sir Oliver!"

This helmet kept falling
off during the tour

Knight Oliver. I feel safer already

This girl saw their costumes, & then convinced
her mom to buy her a princess costume

How much wine I will have consumed by the time I leave Holland

Up the very narrow stairwell...

I had the honor of carrying Knight Oliver's helmet.
Jealous, ladies?

View of a port from the castle

Even knights need help going down the stairs

We found a tent in the dark attic of the castle

haunted?

A room full of costumes to try on!

Apparently that chainmaille was super heavy

Knights protect ladies-in-waiting. Heaven forbid
anything happens to the
castle's most unflattering dresses

Simulated jousting game

Very heavy suit of armor. How did they
get around wearing these things?

Later, Jasper took a ride in the
floating ball (not pictured)

Knights returning from battle

Quick! Lower the drawbridge!

Family planning

Inside the castle

This all reminded me of Alice in Wonderland. "We're painting the roses red..."

Baby knight

And what's a castle without a bouncy slide?
"Chelsea, will you go down the slide with me?"

hmm, I thought the plan was to go together

Warning to all children: THIS IS MY FUN HOUSE!!!

We ended the day with dinner on the beach with Alex's adviser, Julie, and her family
